Hike through Central Pyrénées from Cazères sur Garonne to Pont de Suert

A very beautiful hike through Pyrenees with superb landscapes and the end with the valley of Boí and its magnificent Romanesque churches classified as World Heritage by UNESCO.
Like many of my north-south hikes through Pyrenees, I started from the foot of the mountains to approach them slowly and gradually. It is also possible to start from Toulouse by the Via Garona.
From Cazères sur Garonne, the path begins by going through the “Small Pyrenees” with some splendid panoramas over the entire chain (for example from the orientation table of Belbèze en Comminges).

Hiking through the wild Haut Couserans allows you to reach the border via the beautiful lake of Araing.

In Spain, the path first runs along the border with lakes and views of the Maubermé.

Then, it crosses two emblematic places of the Pyrenees, the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park

and the Boí Valley with its Romanesque churches classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Useful informations

Public transport :

Cazères-sur-Garonne is easily accessible by train (Toulouse-Boussens-Tarbes line). It is also possible to start in the Salat valley, in Castagnède (bus line from Boussens to Saint-Girons).
Another possibility is to start in Saint-Gaudens or Montréjeau and reach Fos then by the GR10 the pond of Araing. If you want to focus on the most mountainous part, Fos is accessible by public transport.
Barcelona-Vielha-Les buses pass through Pont de Suert with a connection for bus line 395 from Les to Saint-Gaudens for return by train to the starting point.

Difficulties :

It is a high mountain course with several passes above 2,500 meters in altitude, therefore with unstable weather and snowfields that can remain late in the season. The entire route is on mostly marked trails but in some parts the markings are light. There are passages in scree (but without climbing or exposed and aerial areas).

Trail marks :

Apart from some short parts, the whole route is on marked trails but sometimes these are only rare cairns. Being able to follow your GPS track will therefore be necessary.

Lexicon :

Bivouac: wild camping, usually according to French regulation, in a small tent (where you can’t standing) and pitched only for the night.
Abri: shelter. It’s unclosed (no door, some with just a roof) quite similar to those on the Appalachian Trail.
Cabane: small hut or shelter. It has a door. Some “cabanes” are occupied in summer by shepherds and open the rest of the year.
Refuge non gardé : unattended hut. Unlike a simple “cabane”, usually there are beds with mats.
Refuge: hut. You sleep in dorms, they can provide meals. Some of them even have showers.
Gîte d’étape: It’s like a refuge (or hostel) but accessible by road. You sleep in dorms (some have also bedrooms), they can provide meals. You will find “gîtes d’étape” on the main hiking trails.

Accomodation and resupply :

See the table below with my steps, shelters, cabins and shops.
Resupply : there is no resupply point between Saleich and Taüll. A solution is from the border, to go down to Salardú to have an intermediate resupply point and then to join the Amitges by the refuge of Saboredo.
Water : there is water frequently with fountains, springs and sometimes water from the river.
Accomodation : apart from the first stage, there are frequently shelters or huts. To do the route without a tent, the way through Salardú and the Saboredo refuge will be easier.
Bivouac : In the Aigüestortes y Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, bivouacs are prohibited, including next to shelters.

Specifically for the Pyrenees, the site Pyrenees-refuges.com is very complete on this massif. It’s possible to download the gps position of all the “cabanes” and “refuges”.

With the website Brouter.de you can draw a GPS track following the existing ways and trails.
When I’m on my way, I’m using the Iphigénie application. With it, you can have offline IGN topographic maps (both for France and Spain). It’s also possible to send beacons of my position (if there is network); this can be reassuring on certain occasions.

Des passages en forêt et de beaux points de vue sur la chaîne (par exemple de la table d’orientation de Belbèze en Comminges). Castagnède est sur la ligne de bus de Boussens à Saint-Girons et peut être aussi le point de départ de cet itinéraire. 32km – 850m de dénivelés

5 Refugi Gerber Mataró – Au pied du col del Pessó		Le grand spectacle du parc national d’Aigüestortes. Le secteur des Amitges et de Sant Maurici est très fréquenté. Après Colomina, j’ai préféré le passage en direction du col del Pessó (chemin balisé avec cairns) par une série de lacs plutôt que le GR qui va en direction du Port de Rus. 27km – 1800m de dénivelés

6 Au pied du col del Pessó – Pont de Suert		Sur des chemins balisés (cairns pour le col del Pessó puis GR). Toujours de belles vues sur les montagnes et les magnifiques villages et églises romanes de la vallée de Boí. J’ai pris l’option de passer par l’émouvant village abandonné d’Esperan et sa très belle église romane. La descente sur Esperan se fait d’abord par des prés puis par un vieux sentier parfois un peu envahi par les épineux. On pourra préférer rester sur le GR qui passe par Irgo. 37km – 1790m de dénivelés
