Via Algarviana

I was inspired by the Via Algarviana but my trail is quite different. Until Cachopo, I went more directly on several occasions. Then I continued further north, on the border of the Algarve and Alentejo. I joined Monchique with a shorter route of about forty kilometers than Via Algarviana.
It is a pleasant path in depopulated rural areas. There are almost any roads. Most of the way is on gravel roads. The fairly dry landscape at the start with few or no waterways is greener (in spring) going west.

Useful informations :

Resupply :
Water : in the first part, there is water only in the inhabited places and at the beginning the taps in the villages were closed. In the spring, there were streams going west.

Food: There are several villages with small grocery stores (see table below). So there is no need to carry a lot.

Accomodation : The possibilities are not very numerous. The prices for the night vary between 25€ and 45€. On my way at the border of Algarve and Alentejo, there is nothing between Cachopo and São Marcos da Serra.

Bivouac in Portugal : it seems that it is forbidden but tolerated outside the summer period and outside the beaches.

Trail marks : The Via Algarviana is very well marked. Then, I often walked on short marked trail.

Climate: I walked mid-March. The conditions were ideal. Cool in the morning, almost hot in the afternoon. I haven’t had any rain. The countryside was still green with flowers.

Payment: for accommodation, it is most often in cash. The credit card is not widely accepted. There are regular ATMs.

Network: I had network almost constantly.

GPS track – Maps :

To draw a track, the website Brouter.de (see video) allows to draw following the existing ways and trails.
When I’m on my way, I’m using the Iphigénie application. With it, you can have offline OpenTopoMap. Those maps are good with paths, huts, springs… It’s also possible to send beacons of your position (if there is network); this can be reassuring on certain occasions.
The application Mapy .cz is great and free too with marked trails, springs, points of interest, shelters, huts… It is possible to download the maps to have access offline.

GPS track :

Attention ! The GPS track below has been made at my return. In all cases, the reality on the ground should be privileged. In case of way through private land, ensure the authorization of the owner.

11 Alcoutim – Furnazinhas		D’Alcoutim, j’ai évité la boucle vers le nord que fait la Via Algarviana. J’ai pris un sentier raide puis une courte liaison dans la végétation pour rejoindre des pistes puis la Via Algarviana. Ensuite des chemins, balisage excellent. Tous les points d’eau étaient fermés dans les hameaux. Aucun commerce sur cette partie. La rivière Foupana entre Palmeira et Furnazinhas est un bel endroit pour baignade ou arrêt. 23km 710m de dénivelés.

12 Furnazinhas – Cachopo		J’ai quitté Furnazinhas par un sentier qui longe le ruisseau puis par une piste, j’ai retrouvé la Via Algarviana à la sortie de Monte Novo. Ensuite je l’ai suivie jusqu’à la route de Vaquieros (sans le crochet à Malfrades). Je ne suis pas allé à Vaquieros ; par des chemins, j’ai rejoint la Via Algarviana à Monchique et l’ai suivie jusqu’à Cachopo (hormis un raccourci après Amoreira). 30km 870m de dénivelés.

13 Cachopo – São Barnabé		J’ai quitté la Via Algarviana pour un tracé plus court d’une quarantaine de kilomètres jusqu’à Monchique. De Cachopo, sur des chemins souvent balisés PR ou GR 13.6 avant Ameixal. Ensuite quelques parties balisées et toujours des chemins. Pas de route. Plusieurs rivières coulaient sur tout le parcours. 43km 1240m de dénivelés.

15 São Marcos da Serra – Monchique		L’objectif était de rejoindre Monchique en évitant la route principale. Il y a peu de chemins sur les cartes Opentopomap mais en fait, entre les pistes et les coupes-feu, il y a pas mal de possibilités. Montée très raide après Ribeiro par une ancienne piste puis large pistes et raides coupes-feu dans les plantations d’eucalyptus. Après Alferce, c’est balisé mais souvent sur des routes (petites). 26km 1380m de dénivelés.

16 Monchique – Lagos		J’ai suivi le balisage de la Via Algarviana jusqu’un peu après Monte Canelas (bon balisage, essentiellement des chemins et quelques parties sur petites routes). Ensuite piste puis petites routes jusqu’à Lagos via Odiáxere. 34km 450m de dénivelés.
